A small number of Netflix users have started to notice a prompt when sharing Netflix passwords. The prompt asks users to verify ownership of the account by entering a code received from the account owner’s email address or phone number. The CEO has made comments in the past that in his opinion, sharing passwords could be viewed as a “terrific marketing vehicle” and that kids who grew up would eventually subscribe to the service. It’s yet to be seen how Netflix will employ its restrictions; how will they approach a child away at college using the password or a spouse who frequently travels for work? The prompts are not currently widespread and only appear to be targeted at a small amount of users who have shared the prompt online through social media.
