Twitter admitted to accidentally suspending any accounts that tweeted out “Memphis” today. Their mea culpa was tweeted out earlier this evening.
A number of accounts that Tweeted the word “Memphis” were temporarily limited due to a bug. It’s been fixed and the accounts have now been restored. We’re sorry this happened.
The bug affected a significant number of accounts who were tweeting about events and people involving Memphis. Today there were protests in Memphis, Tennessee against the Byhalia Pipelines. Memphis University’s mens basketball team earned an NIT bid. Tweeting about footballer, Memphis Depay, by name also was rewarded with an account suspension as well as just tweeting out any mention of the city of Memphis, Tennessee.
Twitter was working on correcting its mistake and restoring all suspending accounts.
